A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the Boots and Beer Dinner at House of Blues. This dinner was a collaborative effort between the excellent chefs at House of Blues, and the crisp, flavorful beer produced by Karbach Brewing Co. out of Houston.
The HOB chefs and the beer makers at Karbach worked hand in hand to bring the guests that evening a well thought out and planned four course meal. Each course was built to pair perfectly with a specific brew from Karbach.
The dinner started around 8:00, but seeing as this ain't my first rodeo, I hit the HOB bar beforehand and grabbed a Karbach Hopadillo IPA on draft.
When we arrived, the table was all set complete with lots of goodies, koozies, and even tickets to the upcoming Local Brews Local Grooves Craft Beer and Music Fest coming to HOB on the 18th! Important side note: YOU NEED to go to this event, it's coming up, get tickets HERE.
Our host for the evening was the Dallas area sales rep from Karbach, and she knew her stuff. After asking her loads of questions about both the brewery and the difference in beer scene in Dallas vs. Houston (spoiler: Dallas is WAY bigger) we were served our first course.
BREW: ZEE GERMAN PILS
GRUB: QUAIL QUESADILLAS NOPALITO RAJAS, HOUSE MADE ROASTED SALSA
I had to physically stop myself from eating this entire thing, seeing as I knew there were three more courses to come. The house made roasted salsa drizzle on the top was perfection. I'd never had quail (that I could remember) before and it was not an intimidating flavor at all. The quil was actually quite delicious and perfect in this quesadilla paired with the light, traditional German Pilsner.
BREW: Rodeo Clown Double IPA
GRUB: ZA'ATAR SPICED LAMB LOLLIPOP WITH MINTED SPRING PEA PUREE AND POMEGRANATE SEEDS
Ok so I love peas and IPAs so this was like a dream combo for me. Ok, that one sounded a little odd but wait until you see the color combos in this dish. You can literally see the flavor popping off the photo. It was funny, everyone started this course using their knife and fork, but by the end, we were all gnawing on the bone! If this is what an adult lollipop looks like, well then sign me up!
BREW: HOPADILLO IPA
GRUB: SMOKED BONE-IN SHORT RIB WITH WHIPPED POTATOES AND GRILLED ASPARAGUS
Let me paint this picture for you... I slipped my fork down into this short rib, and it literally fell off the bone. It was the most tender piece of meat, and absolutely delicious. You can bet I didn't "pace" myself with this course, I pretty much just licked the bowl clean.
BREW: THREE LEGGED LAB IMPERIAL STOUT
GRUB: FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE TORTE
I normally don't fancy stouts (lezzbe real tho: I like anything that starts with B and ends with EER) but paired with this decadent flourless chocolate torte and it was a tasty final treat. Plus, it didn't hurt that it was freezing out side that day, and a nice indulgent Stout + Torte was just the ticket!
Going forward, the chefs at HOB told us they are planning on doing many more dinner pairings with your favorite local breweries, wineries and liquor companies.
